Guillermo Francos: “We need to advertise our power as producers in the nuclear field”

The Chief of Staff made these statements during a tour of the CAREM reactor project being developed by the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA).

There, Francos also learned about the progress of two other emblematic CNEA projects: the RA-10 reactor for the production of radioisotopes and the Argentine Proton Therapy Center, which researches treatments for hard-to-reach tumors and childhood cancer.

The Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos, visited the projects being carried out by the National Atomic Energy Commission at the Lima site in the province of Buenos Aires, accompanied by national authorities. In this context, Francos stated that "we need to make known the power we have as producers in the nuclear field and be able to offer this knowledge to the world."

"This is an essential visit for the national government. We are supporting the nuclear engineering team in Argentina, which has been so prolific over time," expressed the Chief of Staff, who toured the site along with the president of CNEA, Germán Guido Lavalle.

The national delegation, including authorities from the Cabinet Office, Ministry of Economy, National Atomic Energy Commission, Nucleoeléctrica Argentina, Banco Nación, and the Investment and Foreign Trade Bank (BICE), toured the CAREM reactor project, where they conducted a walkthrough and learned about the progress of the works.

The president of CNEA asserted that "nuclear energy is needed for the transition to renewable energies." "There is a greater demand for electric power due to electric cars and artificial intelligence. This is the moment for nuclear opportunity: we have a window of time, and we need to seize it," stated Guido Lavalle.

The CAREM reactor, whose construction was visited today, is a prototype of a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR), capable of producing electricity for a population of 120,000 inhabitants. The project involves 70% participation from the national industry, with over a thousand companies providing services, engineering, and components.

Additionally, details were provided on two other emblematic CNEA projects: the RA-10 reactor for the production of radioisotopes and the Argentine Proton Therapy Center for the treatment of hard-to-reach tumors and childhood cancer. These projects can achieve better results with synergy from private investment.

The work visit also included participation from the Cabinet Office's Deputy Chief of the Executive Cabinet, José Rolandi; the Undersecretary of Budget Evaluation, Enrique Pinedo; and the National Director of Public Investment, Marina Barbeito. Representing the Ministry of Economy was José García Hamilton. Also present were the president of Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA, Luis Fasanella, and the president of BICE Trusts, Maximiliano Voss. From Banco Nación, the Deputy Manager of Fiduciary Operations, José Manuel López Alberti, and the Head of the Trust Department, Adolfo Alejandro del Valle, attended.
