He is the Insurance Commissioner of California, United States, where he oversees the largest insurance market in the United States and the fourth largest in the world. In that role, he promoted the Sustainable Insurance Strategy, the most significant insurance reform in 30 years, and has passed laws that foster innovation and investment in clean air, promote equity, and protect natural infrastructure. He is the author of the nation's first climate insurance law.
Commissioner Lara previously served as a district representative in the California Legislature from 2010 to 2018.
